Luminescence of copper in a xenon cryomatrix

We have studied the photoluminescence spectra of copper atoms and molecules isolated in a xenon cryomatrix when they are excited into their lowest excited states. The experimental data demonstrate that the excitation of the atom leads to formation of a multiatomic excimer (CuXe12) in the matrix. The emission spectrum of the copper molecule is controlled by a two-quantum excitation mechanism in the dissociating molecule. The two-quantum process leads to population of excimer states of the same nature as those found upon excitation of the atom.
