Dispersion of acoustic phonons in dilute solutions of 3He in 4He

A new relaxation process in the phonon-impurity system is identified by means of precision relative measurements of the sound velocity in dilute solutions of 3He in 4He. The characteristic relaxation time to equilibrium in a phonon gas with anomalous dispersion in the presence of impurities is determined. It is shown that the measured temperature variations of the sound velocity in dilute solutions of 3He in 4He at various frequencies are in good agreement with the predictions of the new kinetic theory of solutions.
