The authors have experimentally investigated the current-voltage characteristics of copper and platinum wire specimens (R300/R4.2≃102), cooled by saturated helium vapor at about 4.2 K. They have analyzed the features of the I–V characteristics that are associated with the formation of thermal-electric domains. The values determined for the maximum temperature, shape, and size of the domains are compared with those calculated from the solution of the heat equation with allowance for real conditions of heat transfer and mechanisms of energy dissipation in the bulk metal.
