Structural and electrical properties of the superconducting phase of La2−<i>x</i>,Sr<i>x</i>CuO4

A structural phase transition (PT) from a tetragonal to an orthorhombic phase has been found which precedes the appearance of superconductivity in specimens of La2−xSrxCuO4 (x = 0.1–0.3). The PT is close to second order and is evidently produced by a cooperative Jahn–Teller effect. Kinks in the temperature dependence of the electrical resistance correspond to the characteristic temperatures for the phase transition.
