SYNOPSIS Summer (December-March) drought mortality of Cape Proteaceae seedlings during an average summer is low (about 7%) on the inland mountain ranges of the Southern Cape. Mortality depends on moisture conditions (soil depth, aspect) and the age of the seedlings by the onset of summer. Micro-site conditions, such as microweir formation, appear Important for successful establishment. No density dependent mortality was observed. The implications of these results for fynbos dynamics are discussed.
