SYNOPSIS Data on the curing rates of one, two and three-year-old grassland are presented. Curing is initiated at the end of April and progresses rapidly up to the middle of May. By June the grasses are 95 % cured, increasing the fire hazard in winter. A simple model was developed to estimate fuel moisture from easily measured atmospheric variables. This model will enable managers to predict the process of curing more accurately and so aid prescribed burning.
