Annotatsiya

X-ray diffraction studies of polycrystalline oxygen reveal a strong spontaneous magnetostriction in the rhombohedral phase, leading to considerable nonuniform deformational distortions of the lattice and a partial amorphization of crystals in the vicinity of the temperature of transition to the antiferromagnetic phase. The obtained results point towards the formation of quasi-two-dimensional regions of short-range magnetic order in the basal planes of β-oxygen. Experimental information is obtained about the primacy of low-temperature transformation and the possibility of realizing an intermediate modulated magnetic structure in its vicinity.
