CONCEPTUALISATION OF POSSESSIVNESS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The article focuses on the category of possessiveness in the English language. The development and changes in the category of case in English nouns is discussed diachronically. That the classification of case differentiates greatly in Indo-European languages has been studied in the examples of several languages according to different linguists’ opinions. Two types of possessive case have been revealed: a) dependent possessive case; b) non-dependent possessive case; their differences are identified. This article deals with the processes that distinguish substantial posessive and qualitative posessive syntaxemes. The ways of expressing, variations of possessive syntaxemes and their syntactic positions are defined. Moreover, in distinguishing these categorical signs, it is necessary to pay attention not only to the syntactic units that express them, but also to their syntactic position in the sentence structure and their distributive relations. In the article, the transformational method is used to prove that qualitative syntaxemes cannot be combined with attributes on the basis of syntactic relation. Having studied category of possessiveness in the English sentence structure 9 variations of substantial possessive syntaxemes have been observed, five of which are discussed within the article in a detailed way The article may attract the interest of the ones who deal with syntactic semantics and/or structural linguistics.\n\n
