Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of existing approaches to assessing the results of teaching a foreign language, as well as the possibilities of authentic assessment. The authors emphasize the recognition at the state level of the importance and urgency of the problem and note the role of authentic assessment as an effective tool for the formation of motivation to learn foreign languages. The advantages of authentic assessment are pointed out. It is noted that the use of self-and mutual assessment allows the student to be placed at the center of the educational process and provides optimal conditions for student-centered learning.
