Urolithiasis remains a pressing problem in both adult and pediatric populations, despite the advances made. Most cases of urolithiasis in children are associated with anatomic or metabolic abnormalities or infections of the urinary tract.According to the European Association of Urology, for kidney stones ≤20 mm in diameter in children, shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) is recommended as the first choice treatment method. Stone fragments formed after SWL are excreted faster in children than in adults, but as practice shows, SWL requires repeated sessions under general anesthesia.
