Evaluating and stabilization of Firooz Nakhchir orchards using satellite imagery and Google Earth Engine

Satellite data is widely used, and satellite remote sensing plays a significant role in environmental and geographical studies. The extraction of vegetation and green space can be considered one of the practical applications of remote sensing technology. This study was conducted to measure the area of horticultural lands in the center of Firooz Nakhchir district of Samangan province using Landsat 7 and 8 satellite images in the last 20 years (2000 to 2020) employing Google Earth engine environment. The main objective of this study is to measure and investigate the time-series change detection of the orchards in Firuz Nakhchir during the last two decades and its correlation with the land surface temperature using satellite imagery. Initially, the vegetation-covered area was extracted using the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). Consequently, the area was calculated every five years. In order to evaluate the effects of vegetation on reducing and controlling land surface temperature (LST), the surface temperature was calculated using thermal bands of Landsat images. The results of this study showed that orchards in Firuz Nakhchir district have increased significantly in the last 20 years, from 452 Hectares in 2000 to 1232 Hectares in 2020. The output of this study revealed that vegetation density and land surface temperature have a strong inverse correlation. The final results obtained from this investigation indicated that the orchards in the Firooz Nakhchir district increased significantly throughout the last 20 years.
