Electric power systems (EPS) are complex nonlinear systems in nature. Their behavior is difficult to predict due to their large size, the nonlinearity of system elements, dynamic interaction within the system itself. It is extremely important to develop tools for timely and accurate analysis of power systems' stability and obtain the necessary control actions to increase the stability margins and prevent accidents. The article proposes an approach based on an evolutionary method for solving optimization problems - a genetic algorithm to determine the operating parameters of a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. This work aims to select the tuning parameters of the PID controller by optimizing (minimizing) the response of the system under study to a single disturbance. The study presents an efficient search algorithm for tuning parameters of the PID controller of the system used as automatic excitation control (AEC) of synchronous machines. The results are obtained in the form of gains of PID controllers and characteristics of the transient mode for two options: the absence and presence of natural damping of the synchronous generator.
