Major Trends in Vocabulary and Usage in the English Language in the 21st Century

It has been evident that human language recurrently changes over time and undergoes constant evolution. There have been extensive changes in the English language in terms of grammatical structures, new word patterns, and vocabulary and their usage. Consequently, the present study envisions outlining some major trends in vocabulary usage in modern 21st century English. A qualitative analysis method is used to explore the patterns of change with respect to time in the English language. The study has investigated the newly emerged trends in language usage, such as the use of abbreviations and short phrases, changes in the grammar and pronunciations over time, the concept of borrowed words. Moreover, the word-formation processes, coining of words, occasionalism and nonce words, compounding and formation of compound words, blending of words, as well as derivation are also discussed.
