Bison and Deer Handling and Transport
Annotatsiya
Bison and deer are both relatively new farmed species in North America, while deer have been reared in Europe for centuries. Improvements in human–animal interactions when working with bison and deer have resulted in better safety for handlers and enhancement of animal welfare. Regular exposure to calm handlers and training of both species to move smoothly through facilities is beneficial. Handling systems work best when they take advantage of the animals’ natural behavioural tendencies to return to where they came from. All people working with bison and deer should be adequately trained (including in relation to human and animal safety); in some countries, this is required by legislation, welfare codes and industry guidance. This chapter covers best handling and transport practices for bison, red deer, wapiti and other deer species, where relevant.
