In the Middle Ages, paper production became a very profitable industry. Bukhara and Samarkand began to sell paper to other provinces of the Caliphate. The supply of various types of paper to the European market contributed not only to European but also to world cultural development. Paper replaced papyrus, leather and parchment, which were previously used as the main materials for writing.
