The Development of IT Education in Uzbekistan

This research paper examines the development of information technology (IT) education in Uzbekistan within both global and local contexts. Internationally, leading universities such as MIT, Oxford, and UC Berkeley have played a central role in advancing computer science, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, emphasizing the importance of university–industry collaboration in shaping highly skilled professionals. In Uzbekistan, IT education first emerged during the Soviet period, when computer science and automation were introduced at Tashkent State University. After independence, education reforms expanded informatics as a compulsory school subject and opened pathways for modern IT training. Recent initiatives, including the establishment of international branch campuses such as INHA University, Amity University, and Ajou University, have aligned national education with global standards. Government programs such as the “One Million Coders” project and IT Park Uzbekistan have further accelerated digital transformation, expanding opportunities for young specialists. Findings suggest that while Soviet-era IT education was largely theoretical, contemporary reforms and international partnerships now emphasize practical skills, innovation, and global competitiveness. The study concludes that Uzbekistan’s IT education system is undergoing rapid modernization, integrating best international practices and national strategies to strengthen human capital for the digital economy.
