The development of academic writing competence in students is a critical component of higher education. Academic writing not only enhances students’ ability to communicate knowledge effectively but also fosters critical thinking, research skills, and professional growth. This article explores the theoretical foundations of academic writing competence, examining key principles, models, and approaches that underpin its formation. The study emphasizes the importance of a systematic, pedagogically grounded approach to developing writing skills, highlighting the role of both cognitive and socio-cultural factors. Special attention is given to the integration of national educational standards and policies, including the implementation of the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 5117, which sets requirements for the development of students’ competencies in higher education.
