Efficiency of Top Soil Grain Size Index (TGSI) in Assessing Desertification Using Satellite Data

Desertification has gained grave attention from communities, scientists, administrators, and other stakeholders due to its aggravating nature across the globe. Hundreds of millions of people are affected by drought and famine, resulting in soil degradation and loss of vegetation. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) provided a brief definition that desertification is land degradation in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas, where the ratio of annual precipitation to potential evapotranspiration falls within the range 0.05- 0.65, due to various factors including soil, temperature, climate, precipitation, land use and land cover, wind, and anthropogenic factors. This research investigates the effectiveness of the Topsoil Grain Size Index (TGSI) in accurately deriving desertification data, comparing its performance with other indices such as NDVI.
