Arduino-Controlled Hybrid Optical–RF Sensor Node for Energy-Aware Structural Health Monitoring
Annotatsiya
The monitoring of the condition of civil infrastructure, e.g. bridges, buildings, and industrial structures, by Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is nowadays relying on low-power sensor nodes. Traditional RF based wireless sensor networks have issues associated with spectrum congestions, lack of energy efficiency and electromagnetic interference. The present paper proposes an Arduino-based hybrid OpticalRF sensor node to be used in energy sensitive SHM. The mechanism. The dynamically switching between the visible light communication (VLC) and the RF transmission determined by the conditions of the channel and the remaining energy. High-data-rate, lowinterference communication over a line of sight is performed using optical links, whereas RF provides robust connectivity in the event of blockage. The experimental and simulation results are showing that there is better energy efficiency, low latency, and increased reliability compared to the old-fashioned RF-only SHM nodes.
