Volunteering as a Factor in Forming Value Orientations of a Modern Student

In the modern conditions of development of volunteer activities, the focus is on the formation of university students’ value orientations. Accordingly, the task of forming patriotism in modern youth is of primary importance, since patriotism is a socially approved vector of personality development. The attitude of a university student to volunteer activities depends not only on the degree of involvement in volunteering, but also on the success in forming key value orientations. The overall aim of this study is to develop new knowledge about volunteering as a factor in forming university students’ value orientations in Russian research and practice perspective. We used the systematic literature search and review to study various areas of volunteer activities, such as social, cultural, sports volunteering, etc. The study examines in detail the practice of volunteering focused on the formation of patriotism as a value and medical volunteering. Our systematic search and selection procedure focuses on literature across the key thematic areas: volunteering, volunteer activities, university students’ value orientations, and active civic position. We drew on relevant peer-reviewed journal articles, reports of students’ volunteer activities, and policy documents. In addition, the study also included the organization, monitoring, and control of volunteer activities of patriotic and humanistic orientation (medical volunteering). The study identified two of the most promising areas of volunteering: patriotic volunteering and medical volunteering.
