The article examines how the cryptographic clue in Dan Brown’s novels structures plot movement, reading tempo and interpretation. The material includes «Digital Fortress», «Angels & Demons», «The Da Vinci Code», «The Lost Symbol», «Inferno», and «Origin». The analysis shows that in Brown’s prose the code is not only an object to be solved, but also a device that moves the reader across spaces, bodies of knowledge, and successive layers of secrecy.
