Abstract Rapid advances in cutting-edge agrotechnologies, including artificial intelligence, genomics, and digital agricultural systems, such as smartphone-based applications, are transforming efforts to address global food security challenges. However, this accelerating “technocratization” of agriculture can also pose hidden risks to the core pillars of a healthy society and planet: human dignity (humanity), environmental sustainability (ecological responsibility), and fairness (social justice). To address and minimize these risks, this study introduces the HECI framework (Humanity, Ethics, Creativity and Imagination) as a humanistic complement to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), with the main objective of establishing STEM + HECI as a more enduring model for responsible and compassionate innovation in agricultural systems. HECI, developed and piloted through agricultural reforms in Uzbekistan, offers a values-based and human-centered perspective for integrating philosophy, ethical reasoning, creativity, and foresight into technical instruction and practice. Through a conceptual comparative analysis, this article suggests that combining STEM with HECI can support agricultural systems that are more resilient, sustainable, equitable, and aligned with human needs. The analysis indicates that embedding HECI across education, policy, and governance provides practical strategies for addressing global challenges and can contribute to realizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Public Interest Technology in the global food system.
