GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ADDRESS TERMS IN KOREAN
Annotatsiya
This article explores the systematic classification of address and reference terms in the Korean language, a fundamental component of its sociopragmatic structure. By synthesizing the theoretical frameworks of prominent linguists such as Jeon Hye-yeong, Lucien Brown, Lee Am, Choe Tak-rae, Kang Sosan, and Chon Eunjoo, the study identifies eight primary categories of address forms. The analysis demonstrates how these linguistic units are intricately linked to Confucian values, social hierarchy, age seniority, and situational context. The findings highlight that Korean address terms function not merely as lexical items but as dynamic tools for negotiating interpersonal distance and maintaining social harmony (inhwa). This comprehensive overview serves as a methodological foundation for both sociolinguistic research and advanced Korean language pedagogy.
