SKOVSTED (193 7) separated Gossypium species into three, WEBBER (1939) separated them into four, and HARLAND (1939) separated them into six general types. These authors considered morphology and chromosome number and gave some attention to chromosome pairing in hybrids and to geographical distribution. In the present work, with more emphasis placed on chromosome pairing and structural differences among the chromosomes, the species are divided into six types. One of HARLAND'S types is divided, while two others are combined.
