Abstract Values of the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of LaF3, CeF3, PrF3 and NdF3 single crystals were determined in the visible and the near-ultraviolet regions. The dispersion of the indices was analysed by using a single-effectiveoscillator model. The energy of the oscillator agrees well with the first strong peaks in the reflectance spectra of these crystals.
