Maris's numerical results for the viscosity of phonons with anomalous dispersion in superfluid ${\mathrm{He}}^{4}$ are obtained by a simplified method which involves variational calculation of the eigenvalues of the completely continuous part of the collision integral operator in the phonon Boltzmann equation. We also obtain an analytic expression relating a sequence of wide-angle relaxation times to the phonon frequency anomaly.
