Piezo-acoustic rotation in crystals

A relationship between acoustic and optical gyrotropic tensors is given. The effect of stress on acoustical activity for crystals belonging to D3, S4, and Td point groups is studied and it is found that in the acoustically inactive S4 and Td point groups, for unaxial stress along x direction and for propagation along z direction, the degeneracy of the shear wave is lifted giving rise to left-elliptical and right-elliptical polarized modes. The experimental method of observing such splittings is suggested.
