ABSTRACT Studies on damage caused by insects in the USSR provide a basis for establishing economic threshold levels for pest populations. Consideration is given to the relationship existing between insects and their host‐plants and to the efficacy of insecticide treatments. Economic thresholds depend to a large extent upon weather conditions and varietal characteristics of a crop. However, when considering different geographical zones it appears that there are no significant differences in economic thresholds. In the USSR, the wide use of economic thresholds yields excellent results and allows for a substantial economy in insecticide use on millions of hectares.
