Abstract A systematic study of the dielectric properties of successively substituted polyolefins has shown that the crankshaft type of local mode motions occurs in some, but not all, fluoropolymers; a con-formational analysis has shown the crankshaft to be of the Boyer form. The introduction of nonplanarity into the polymer chain has been identified as the single reason why the magnitudes of the glass transition dissipation factor peaks are all significantly lower than those of the local mode peaks.
