Checklist of the flora of the transboundary areas of the Western Tian Shan (within Uzbekistan)
Annotatsiya
The greatest mountain systems of Central Asia, Tian Shan and Pamir-Alay, are recognized as one of the global biodiversity hotspots. The Mountains of Central Asia global biodiversity hotspot has a transboundary character and encompasses the territories of all countries in the region. Particularly, the Western Tian Shan distinguishes with outstanding diversity of flora, and extremely high number of endemic and threatened taxa considered key flagship objects of conservation. Under conditions of intensifying transformation processes driven by global climate change and anthropogenic impacts, a number of restricted-range endemic species, growing in the border mountainous regions of Uzbekistan, require the development and implementation of transboundary conservation measures. Within Uzbekistan, transboundary areas of the Western Tian Shan cover the border zone in the Uzbek part of the Karzhantau, Ugam, Pskem, Maidantal, Talas Alatau, Koksu, Chatkal and Kurama mountain ranges, i.e. most of the Bostanlyk District and part of the territory of the Kibray, Pskent and Akhangaran districts of the Tashkent Region and most of the Pap District and part of the territory of the Chust District of the Namangan Region of Uzbekistan. In 2025–2026, within the framework of the research project “Biodiversity Centers of the Transboundary Territories of Uzbekistan and their Current Status” (No. FL-9024093685), the project team of the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan carried out an inventory of the flora of the Uzbek part of the transboundary areas of the Western Tian Shan and compiled a checklist, which includes 2154 species of vascular plants.
