Digitizing astronomical plates around the world: past, present, and future strategies
Annotatsiya
The digitization of astronomical plates is critical for preserving centuries of astronomical observations. This poster presents the efforts of the PDPP-IAU Working Group to advance the digitization of historical plates through international initiatives. We summarize the contributions of major scanning facilities: Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO), DASCH, the Royal Observatory of Belgium, and the NAROO center at Paris Observatory in Meudon. Key public databases are also highlighted: QLPER (China), APPLAUSE (Germany), and APDA-PARI at Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (USA). We review the current state of plate archives worldwide, stressing their continued scientific value and the urgency of preservation. Future strategies, technological improvements, and enhanced collaborations are discussed to ensure global safeguarding of these irreplaceable records. This work underscores the importance of protecting our astronomical heritage for future research and outreach.
