Abstract

A study is made of the creep of cadmium single crystals and its temperature dependence in the range 1.45–40°K. It is shown that a transition occurs in the 12–14°K region from a thermally activated to a quantum creep mechanism. The results obtained are explained on the basis of creep theory, taking into account the effect of zero oscillations on the fluctuation penetration by dislocations of the crystal lattice barriers, and a comparison is made with the data of Glen and also of Arko and Weerttman in the same temperature range. A reason is found for the divergence of the conclusions of these authors regarding the mechanism of cadmium creep in the liquid-helium temperature range.
