Abstract

We have investigated the processes of the formation and radiative relaxation of highly excited states of xenon cryocrystals. The measurements were carried out by means of cathodoluminescence spectroscopy in the region of band-to-band transitions. In the energy range 1.5–5 eV we detected luminescence that is due to both trapped and free hole states with thermalized electrons. The recombination of free band carriers is shown to entail the formation of collective high-energy excitations that correspond to X-exciton states.
