Synthesis of Clofibrate
Abstract
OBJECTIVE To synthesize clofibrate and select the best synthesis route of clofibrate. METHODS There are two process of synthesis. The first one is synthesized from p-aminophenol:through diazotization,substitution to get p-chlorophenol and then condensation,hydrolysis,acidification in the presence of hydrochloric acid with the formation of 4-chlorophenoxy isobutyric acid;esterification with alcohol to give the product. The second is synthesized from phenoxy through condensation,chlorination and esterification in the presence of alcohol to get the final product.RESULTS Clofibrate was synthesized by the second route the overall yield from Phenoxy reaches 70% with 99.5% purity.CONLUSION The second syntheic route was better and had high recovery.
