Abstract

This paper deals with establishing GSM link over Satellite. Abis interface, which is defined between Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and Base Station Controller (BSC), is considered here to be routed over the Satellite. Abis interface is chosen because it can be routed over the Satellite to provide cost effective communication in developing countries with poor terrestrial communication infrastructure, and provide communication in critical scenarios like Disaster Management, where mobility and time to establish reliable link, are the critical issues. We have proposed new protocol architecture for Abis interface over Satellite based on the latest Digital Video Broadcasting over Satellite (DVB-S2) platform. Simulations are done using Erlang/OTP (Open Telecommunication Platform) programming language for the signaling environment of Abis interface and its protocol stack, considering satellite delay. Network availability, integrity and efficiency are evaluated under different scenarios of satellite loss and delay and results are analyzed in comparison to the terrestrial scenario. Based on the simulation analysis, we have proposed new modifications in the parameters for an improved performance in the GSM over Satellite Technology.
