Temperature in contact zone during shot hardening

Abstract

Shot hardening is simulated by the single impact of a rigid spherical particle on a flat steel surface (an elastic halfspace). The corresponding results of thermophysical analysis are presented. Formulas are derived for the temperature at any point in the impact zone and the time for the shot to reach a minimal depth in hardening.
