Abstract

This paper presents some results of the international ethnographic expedition “Great Altai”. The expedition carried out its work in August 2024 in the southern regions of the Altai Republic among the Altai and Telengits. Scientists recorded traditional and modern methods of economy, preserved food traditions, and revived crafts. Southern Altai is a territory of contact and proximity of various religious traditions: shamanism, Buddhism and Islam, which still play a large role in people’s lives today. Important centers for the preservation of historical and cultural heritage are local museums, the exposition of which presents archaeological and ethnographic objects reflecting the culture of the local population. At the same time, modern challenges associated with modernization and the tourist boom in Altai actualize large-scale tasks of studying and preserving the phenomena of the ethnic culture of the Altai and Telengits.
