Abstract
Tetragonal-to-monoclinic martensite transformation due to water adsorption was found on the surface of both dispersed and ceramic oxide-stabilized zirconia. The transformation is due to local stretching strains arising in the lattice when the charge state of a stabilizer changes because of water molecules that are chemisorbed on the powder or ceramic surface.
