Localized states of conduction electrons in an anharmonic elastic medium with nonlinear interactions

The possibility is considered of forming localized electron states in homopolar crystals due to anharmonic properties of the medium and nonlinear terms in the electron–lattice interaction energy. Systems are pointed out where condensation-type states should be expected, and the radius of such states in typical cases is shown to exceed the lattice constant by one order of magnitude, A number of special cases have been investigated quantitatively; the qualitative results obtained, however, are adequate to describe the general picture.
