CONGENITAL GLAUCOMA: CLINICAL ANALYSIS OF 116 CASES

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics of congenital glaucoma(CG).Methods Clinical features of 116 cases(212 eyes) of CG hospitalized between January 2001 to January 2011 were retrospectively analyzed.Results Primary infant type was 43 cases(77 eyes,37.07%),adolescent type 59(112 eyes,50.86%),that with other congenital anomaly 14(23 eyes,12.07%).Both eyes were affected in 96 cases(82.76%),and one eye affected in 20(17.24%),the ratio between both eyes and one eye involvement was 4.8∶1;Male 78 cases(144 eyes,67.24%),and female 38(68 eyes,32.76%),with a ratio of male to female being 2.05 to 1.Mean age was(8.99±6.80) years old,and 30(25.86%) of them went to see a doctor at younger than one year old,but only one(0.86%) at younger than one-month-old.There were 39(33.62%) urban and 77(66.37%) rural patients,of whom,only five(4.31%) had a definite family history.Chief complaint of impaired vision was recorded in 33(28.45%) patients,photophobia and lacrimation in 28(24.14%),and enlargement of the eyeball in 26(22.41%).The mean intraocular pressure was(3.79±1.57) kPa.Corneal diameter ≥12 mm was seen in 111 eyes(60.66%).Corneal cloudy was noted in 42 eyes(19.81%),edema in 42(19.81%) and Haab lines in 17(8.02%).The visual acuity of 0.1 accounted for 43.45%,and C/D ratio ≥0.6 was 82.4%.An operation was done in 185(87.26%) eyes.Conclusion Congenital glaucoma is one of the reasons leading to blindness in children.It presents at birth and is diagnosed late,when the visual function has already damaged.Clinically,a detailed examination should be conducted for suspected cases.A timely treatment is the key to reserve residual sight and visual function.
