Аннотация
The purpose of the work is to identify and analyse the understanding of water security in the countries of Central Asia (CA), as well as a description of the current state of the distribution of water resources.According to WHO and UNICEF forecasts (2019), 2.2 billion people already face freshwater shortages.The CA countries, having a common infrastructure built during the Soviet period, are currently facing an increase in population and climate change.Consequently, due to the interdependence one of the most important elements in maintaining political stability and economic growth in many countries and individual regions is the availability of water resources.The article analyses the official position of the leaders of the countries, gives a brief historiography of the development of water relations, and gives a brief description of the development of regional cooperation within the framework of SIC ICWC and IFAS, as well as neighbouring countries.The most important conclusion is that in order to ensure the sustainable development of the region, both bilateral and multilateral cooperation is needed, in particular for downstream countries, due to dependence on neighbouring countries.
