Inelastic tunnel effect in thin films of condensed gases

Tunnel diodes containing a thin film of physically adsorbed gas in the barrier layer are investigated. Measurements were taken in a special deposition chamber at a temperature of about 5°K. Tunnel spectra of condensed ammonia, methane, and carbon dioxide are obtained, a number of vibrational bands are identified, and the phenomenon of asymmetry of the spectra relative to polarity reversal and the effect of traps on the form of the current-voltage curve are investigated. The effects observed on heating the junctions are studied.
