The photoinduced formation of Bragg gratings in optical fibres is explained as a consequence of convective instability. Close analogy is emphasized between this phenomenon and the photoinduced second harmonic generation in optical fibres. The observed grating formation is interpreted as amplification of very low frequency noise. Predictions concerning the transient processes are made which could be checked experimentally.
