Abstract This chapter chronicles the author's journey from his hometown during the hostilities that followed the outbreak of war. His family had seen the need to evacuate after air raids made staying at home no longer possible. Their journey would follow the path of the Xiuguluan River; their place of refuge eventually being an aboriginal village, where they would live out their lives till the end of the war. It was during this journey that the author had found the slaughtered remains of a water buffalo he'd found crying the day before. The sight of its corpse and the circumstances surrounding it highlighted the sense of fear and desperation of the time, and the human cruelty that would often follow suit.
